I've not much to say today other than whinging about the early morning start and lack of sunshine. So to cheer myself up I am going to touch upon clothes. There is a good basis for this I assure you. Brideshead Revisited has been made into another movie and I am loving the beautiful clothes Anna Madeley as Celia Ryder is wearing in the promotional stills:
How elegant is that dress? Love it. Makes me want to cut my hair a la Louise Brookes and invest in a cigarette holder. It's just a shame I never really enjoyed the book itself, written by Evelyn Waugh. I picked it up after being encouraged to read it by more than one of my university friends, who said there was a nice thrill to match the references to Oxford haunts to the places themselves - hello, the Turf pub, which was a stone's throw from Mansfield. Unfortunately this literary glamour was lost on me; I loathed all the characters in the book and couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Much more interested was I in the trials of Hardy's Jude at the Oxford inspired Christminster - which probably speaks volumes about my complicated relationship with my alma mater :-)
All this aside, the styles of the 1920s and 1930s have long been a love of mine - hence my affection for all things of the hat variety and the fact that I own the box set of the BBC drama The House of Elliott - which I love as much for the glamour and elegance of the couture as the stories. I am torn between my love of a good dress and bad memories of this book ... Maybe, just maybe, a blog will follow on this movie. And if it does, you will know that my shallow side won the day.
